My Trip to Chalmette, Louisiana

I went with a team of five guys to Chalmette, Louisiana recently to help a hurricane victim rebuild his home. It was my first trip to the New Orleans region this year. To be blunt, it was depressing. Businessess are shut down. Homes are vacant. Hospitals like the one in this picture are closed. Entire subdivisions are lifeless. The home we worked on is one of 25% of the homes being rebuilt. 75% of homes in this neighborhood are vacant and have not been touched. We drove through Westwego, Gretna and other areas which are somewhat back up and running. But even those towns are not what they used to be. It is hard to describe to someone. Our team talked about how it looks and feels like an Atomic Bomb has been dropped on the area. People lost everything. Many are not coming back. But in all of that I was reminded of how there is always hope. In the midst of what seems hopeless, there is a Savior who offers hope and comfort. He is our Peace when there is chaos. He is our Shelter when there is a storm. Jesus told us he would never leave us. "...I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
