Beneath the Surface
I just started reading this book my mentor gave me a couple of weeks ago. The title says it all. It starts off talking about the Titanic sinking. The large supposedly unsinkable vessel was brought down by an iceberg hidden beneath the surface. Bob Reccord, the author, parallels that with our spiritual lives. The author writes about the many who have lost their ministries, marriages and families because of the threat beneath the surface. This was highlighted this week by the moral failure of the Governor of New York who has since resigned. He had the image of a squeaky clean prosecutor who went after criminals on Wall Street and those on Main Street. Yet he was living a double-life. We certainly pray for his wife and children and we do hope there can be a restoration and healing in that family. The issue at hand is those threats that lie beneath the surface, maybe we are good at covering them up or keeping them to ourselves, but they are there. This book teaches how to avoid those dangers, making right choices in the face of temptation. It also asks that important question, Will your leadership leave a Legacy of Tragedy or a Legacy of Triumph? Consider how many leaders have thrown everything away. When you hear the news, read the headlines or see the reports about the governor of New York before you pick up those stones to throw them, take an honest look at your own life. Maybe its not adultery that you struggle with, but perhaps some other moral failure. What lies beneath the surface? Be careful it could sink your ship.
