While watching the local evening news the other night I was humored by what the news anchor called, "The most serious issue facing the Louisiana Legislature this year...making cockfighting against the law." I yelled at the television, "You've got to be kidding!" I know the news anchor didn't hear me, but the neighbors may have. Our state is facing a lot of difficult issues right now.
Just to list a few:
- What to do about rebuilding New Orleans?
- How to restructure the state budget with less income coming in from New Orleans?
- Education and Medicare and how to fix the broken system?
- Gambling expansion and where does it end?
I do not define chickens fighting as the most serious issue facing our state. I know the folks at PETA and even normal folks want to ban the sport. I would support legislation that makes cockfighting a crime. But of all the issues facing our legislature this is the most serious??? This is why we never can get anything accomplished in Louisiana. We have no vision. We do not stay focused. We have no leadership. Our legislators decide to focus their attention on chicken fights, instead of the real issues. That way they can come back home to their constituients and smile real big and feel good inside. Call your legislator today and give them a piece of your mind. Tell them not to "Chicken out" this session. It is time for change.
